Developing Clinical Skills in HIV/AIDS

(For clinicians licensed in Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands only.)

Learning to manage HIV/AIDS involves more than acquiring information. Clinical skills are best developed in a clinical setting working side by side with experts treating real patients. The Florida/Caribbean AETC provides opportunities for supervised clinical experiences at sites throughout the region for clinicians licensed to practice in Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. These experiences can be brief introductions to real-life HIV/AIDS treatment or more intensive training in the form of mini-residencies and preceptorships that allow participants to develop sufficient expertise and confidence to take on the challenge of HIV/AIDS management in their own clinical site.

Clinical mini-residencies allow physicians to learn more about the diagnosis, early management, and ongoing treatment of HIV disease. This opportunity is also available to nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists in the form of preceptorships. At our clinics, the program provides extensive clinical training and supervised experience in health care settings affiliated with the Florida/Caribbean AETC. Alternatively, AETC faculty can provide hands-on clinical training and consultation in your clinic. Training is designed to meet the unique needs of the clinic and focuses on clinical issues.

Lectures, seminars, and small group discussions enhance the clinical experience. Each mini-residency and preceptorship is structured to meet the unique needs of the individual participant based on his or her previous experience, background, geographical location, and time available.
