Online Training

HIV and Tuberculosis: A Spark that Lights the Fire

The Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC) has initiated a new online training project. We are pleased to present: "HIV and Tuberculosis."

Dr. David Ashkin exhibits a clinical case study of TB, including photographs, x-rays, treatment and results. Epidemiology and statistics are also presented, along with the relationship between HIV and TB. Diagnosis of TB infection, treatment tools and guidelines, and public health goals for TB are additional components of this training.

There are 89 slides to experience, and the presentation takes approximately one and a half hours to view. You can set your own pace, and have the opportunity to review material for reinforcement. A set of handouts is available, and can be printed and used as support material as you view the presentation. The free, Adobe Acrobat Reader is required for viewing and printing the handouts. The slides for this online training are available in PDF or PowerPoint format (12 MB) . The size is large, so it will take some time to download on some connections.

You will be asked to provide some information about your professional experience with HIV, during the training. This is necessary reporting data for our government-funded training grant.

Goals:
Enhance the awareness of clinicians caring for patients with HIV and TB of the significant interactions between these two pathogens.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize the significant health threat still posed by tuberculosis and the deadly relationship of TB to HIV and the significant medical and public health implications for individuals co-infected with HIV and TB.
  2. Discuss the current available methods of diagnosing TB infection and disease and the ways that HIV can cause difficulty in TB diagnosis.

  3. Understand the measures that are needed to treat and prevent TB through familiarity with the pathogenesis and transmission of the disease.
Technical Note:
This training is best viewed on a broadband connection such as cable or DSL. It incorporates sound virtuals which can be slow to download on a dial-up modem. The program will take between one and two hours to complete, if continuing education credits are desired allow yourself sufficient time to finish the entire training.
