The presenter will discuss the challenges to the application of current approaches in developing countries. Pediatric HIV Research The speaker will review the landmark studies on perinatal transmission and pediatric HIV therapy from which current management guidelines arise. Also, the speaker will evaluate the challenges of designing protocols for HIV therapeutic alternatives for pediatric patients. Learn about ongoing research studies on pediatric and adolescent HIV. |
HIV and Contraception This session will cover an overview of the different contraceptive options available to youth and discuss the benefits and risks. Also, the speaker will discuss the available data on the pharmacologic interactions of contraceptives and antiretroviral therapy. New ARVs in their Role in Pediatric HIV This session will outline the goals of antiretroviral treatment in HIV-infected children and adolescents with a focus on the therapeutic options for salvage therapy on HAART- experienced patients. The speaker will discuss the role of new antiretroviral classes, such as integrase inhibitors, as well as CCR5 inhibitors. Participants will learn about options for simplification of current regimens or in the setting of toxicity. |
Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS)
The speaker will describe the presentation of IRIS in HIV-infected children with understanding of the variety of infectious and inflammatory complications that constitute the syndrome. The speaker will also discuss diagnostic and therapeutic interventions used to minimize the occurrence and severity of this complication once HAART is initiated. |

The speaker will examine the differences in major clinical outcomes after initiation of HAART between HIV-infected children from developed countries vs. resource-limited countries. Also, the speaker will describe the effects of AIDS in immunological recovery. HIV Vaccine Research and New Immunizations The development of an HIV vaccine remains a challenge to HIV investigators. The speaker will discuss an update on the results from recent trials and future initiatives toward an HIV vaccine. Also, the session will present a review of the current immunization schedule for HIV-infected and exposed infants. Finally, attendees will learn about new vaccines including the 13-valent pneumococcal vaccination, the H1N1 influenza vaccine and the HPV vaccines in males. |
Resistance
In this session, the speaker will review genotype, phenotype, integrase resistance and tropism assays, along with their indications and interpretation. Through interactive cases, major resistance profiles and appropriate therapeutic options will be reviewed. |
|
